Salam sejahtera dan selamat pagi.
Terlebih dahulu saya ingin mengucapkan Selamat Datang kepada para dhif jemputan dan pihak Media ke Majlis Pra-Pelancaran “Malaysia International Commodity Conference & Showcase” atau nama singkatnya MICCOS. MICCOS 2007 merupakan satu acara perdana berkaitan dengan sektor komoditi negara yang diadakan secara dwitahunan.

Ladies and gentlemen,
The primary commodities sector with its significant export earnings continues to play its important role as one of the major contributor to the growth of the country’s economy. The Plantation Industries and Commodities sector maintains its contribution of five per cent to the GDP and provides employment to about 1.5 million people. In terms of exports, commodities and commodity-based products has shown tremendous achievement in 2006 with its total export earnings recorded a growth percentage of 16.42 % at RM76.05 billion as compared to RM65.32 billion during the previous year.

In recognition of the significant contributions made by the commodity sector especially in generating revenue for the government, and also providing employment opportunities, a Commodity Week was launched in August 2005. Following its encouraging success, the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities is set once again to launch similar event which now has been renamed as Malaysia International Commodity Conference & Showcase (MICCOS) 2007 to be held on 3 – 8 July 2007 at Putra World Trade Center (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur.

The theme for MICCOS 2007 will be “Opportunities in Commodities: Dynamic, Sustainable and Homegrown” to reflects the importance placed on ensuring our commodity sector prospers not only economically but also sustainably. MICCOS 2007 will showcase the latest technological developments and innovations in the Malaysian commodities sector that include palm oil, timber, rubber, cocoa, pepper, tobacco and kenaf. This exhibition will feature the participation of major producers, manufacturers and exporters, as well as Agencies responsible for the development and promotion of these commodities.

Ladies and gentlemen,
MICCOS will be a focused event specially designed for the commodities industry. As such, the event could be used as a platform to establish and enhance business opportunities, as well as enhancing networking with fellow industry professionals and players in the commodity sector. Visitors to the exhibition can also benefits in terms of broadening ones knowledge on the latest technologies, innovations, industry standards and designs of commodity products. It will also allow them to explore new products and services, meet face-to-face and establish business contacts with key decision makers and buyers from the region and to be in synchronise with the industry’s future growth plans. The public and students are encouraged to visit the exhibition to gain insight knowledge on the nutritional values, business and employment opportunities in the commodities sector. As an exhibitor, the event would allow you to showcase your latest equipments, products and services.

MICCOS 2007 is organised by the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities, with the cooperation from Malaysian Palm Oil Board, Malaysian Rubber Board, Malaysia Timber Industry Board, Malaysian Cocoa Board, Malaysian Pepper Board and National Tobacco Board. This event is also supported by Malaysian Palm Oil Council, Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council, Malaysian Timber Council, Malaysian Timber Certification Council and Malaysian Furniture Promotion Council. The event manager for MICCOS 2007 is ESPIFOKUS Sdn. Bhd.

Ladies and gentlemen,
In conjunction with MICCOS 2007, the Ministry will be presenting the prestigious Commodity awards to outstanding companies, individual smallholders and researchers for their achievements in various fields. A total of seven award categories will be presented. Three conferences will also be organized, namely International Biofuel Conference, Rubber Planters Conference and Conference on Plantation Commodities. Apart from the above major events, there will also be some side events organized such as lucky draws, pop quiz, competitions, demonstrations, food tasting etc. For more details on the event and activities under MICCOS 2007, I invite you to browse through MICCOS dedicated Website at: http://www.miccos.com.my which will also be launched today.

Lastly but not least, it is hoped that MICCOS 2007 will provide the necessary impetus, to the development of the commodity sector, and to making Malaysia the center for production and trade in commodity sector. Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to MICCOS 2007.
